When you ask people why they want to start a home based business, the two main reasons they normally give are, "I want to be my own boss" and, "I want job security." It's therefore surprising that many of these people end up involved in multi-level marketing (MLM) programs that offer them neither of these.

When people make the decision to start a home based business they have visions of being their own boss. They like to think that they'll be able to decide when and how long they work. Most importantly though, they think that they'll have job security. If you're your own boss then nobody can fire you, and if you work from home then there's no chance of your factory or office closing down.

However, once these people go online and start looking for their perfect home based business, it's surprising how many of them see an MLM program as an answer to their prayers for independence. I suppose that on the surface, an MLM program might seem ideal and certainly some of the claims made by the members might add to the appeal but, when you look at it more closely, are you any more secure with an MLM program than you were in your 9 to 5 job?

Any business, whether it's online or offline, is only as good as the product or service that it offers. That's what ultimately brings in the money. You can hire the best staff and have the best marketing campaign in the World but if your product isn't up to scratch then your business will soon suffer. However, most MLM programs don't have good products. The products that they offer are normally in highly competitive market sectors that are dominated by some big companies.

You see, the "big players" in the MLM game, the ones who make their fortunes from it, know that the product has no longevity but they don't care. The reason that they don't care is because they're not selling the product, they're selling the program... to you! They'll tell you that their product's in the video games market and that the video games market's worth so many billions of dollars a year in order to make you think that you're buying into a lucrative market. The fact that you're investing your money in a product that's in no way competitive is kept hidden from you. Sadly, it's only once you've paid your money and then actually start trying to sell the product that you realise you've bought a dodo.

Tip! Develop a timetable and commit yourself to it. But remember, it is just a commitment for a routine - it should not prevent you from taking risks! Unless you dedicate yourself to the cause of your home based business, you could lose interest and motivation over time.

The "big players" make their money from MLM by selling the system and building their downline. They never get caught up in the tiresome task of actually trying to sell the product. They leave that to people in their downline like you. Eventually, the people in their downline become disheartened and start cancelling their memberships, so the "big players" move on to their next MLM conquest. Haven't you noticed how no sooner have you signed up to an MLM program than somebody in your upline is emailing you promoting a totally different program that's supposed to be the "next big thing"?

Tip! The purpose of your home based business should be to help your customers, not take their hard-earned money and run.

It's around this time that the entire MLM program starts to fall apart. People are dropping out left, right and centre, the product isn't selling, and you're left broke and wondering what happened to the "job security" that you were looking for. Sadly, you made the mistake of, once again, putting your destiny in somebody else's hands. Whether you realised it or not, you definitely weren't "the boss"!

The truth is you need to take more control of your own business. Pinning all your hopes on an MLM program is a bad move to make. You need to build your business around flexibility and adaptability. You need multiple income streams so that if one dries up you're still financially buoyant until you can find another to replace it. That's the only way to ensure a truly secure home based business.
