If you are reading this article then I am sure you must be searching the Internet looking for away to make extra money online by starting up a home business. You must also be asking your self if the home business you are looking into a scam or is it the real deal. Its sad but also true that most home business programs online today are scams, rather then legitimate home business opportunities. Thats why its important to know exactly what you are getting before you start.

So just how can you tell if the home business you are thinking of joining is a scam or the real deal? Well you most take your time and do your homework on the program. You never want to jump into something right away no matter how good it may sound.

First you will want to do a background check on the home business program. Do a google search and read up on exactly what you will be getting into. More then likely you will find a number of different reviews that people have wrote on the home business you are looking to get into. Read over those reviews, and if you can try to some how contact the person who did the review and talk to them one on one.

After you do a background check another great way to tell if what you are doing is the real deal or not is to call the company or person up themselves, and ask as many questions as you can. If you dont get and answer the first time try one more time. If you get no answer again then this may be a sign that its not what they say it is.

Another good way to check any home business program is to see if they offer a physical product, or if its something that you just download to your computer. Most real home business programs will have a physical product that you can actually use.

These are some very good ways you can go about to tell if your home business program you are looking into is the real deal or if its just one big scam. Always remember to do your homework on any business opportunity on the Internet. No doing so could cause you to lose a lot of money that you could have saved and spent elsewhere.

first thing you do is a web search like this

    BUSINESS NAME scam rip off

where business name is the name of the business you are looking into.

Most home based business you see on the net are MLMs where only a few make a lot of money at it.. Usually those selling you the scheme are the only ones making money.

The big question is why are you getting into a home business? Do you have a passion for what you want to do? What is your why?

All I can recommend is finding something you love to do, Do as much research as you can. Do not rely on the internet as your sole basis for your research. There are too many negative neds out there posting negative things about everything. Check with your local Chamber of Commerce. Attend local networking meetings. Ask your family and friends for their advise. Here are some links to help you.

"Trying to Help" provides good links and good advice except for the part on MLM. MLM is like any business in that you still have to sell products and the business opportunity to make money. The following link provides detailed info on how MLM works. It does not promote any company.

Anyway, I wish you great success with whatever business you choose. When you decide on your business, send me a message with the link via the profile page. I will then send it to my family and friends.

For a home business, you should expect to pay something to start a home business. You can’t start ANY business without some sort of start up cost–even selling cakes from your home requires some sort of start up. Of course, you should be careful how much that cost is. A huge start up would be a red flag for me. You should also know what you’re getting for the start up cost. On the other hand, you should never have to pay to get a job. Their is a huge difference. Check out their credentials. See if they are listed with the BBB. Make sure there is a real address and real phone number for the company. Honestly, I don’t take much merit in what I find from other people on the internet. You will ALWAYS find people who are unhappy with any business. But, you can always ask people you know. Probably the most important thing is to go with your gut. You’ll know if it just doesn’t seem right.

I tried over 15 opportunities in the course of 2 years so I have some great information for you plus a list of top 10 work at home scams!

I am a mother of two little girls who are actually tugging on my arm as I write this so I will try to be brief. Many people are looking for work from home companies. All the scams definitely create a big problem but also, there is a problem of people misunderstanding the difference between work from home "jobs" and work from home opportunities. There really are not work from home “jobs”. To get that you have to start working for a company in their offices first, then they MAY allow you to take the job home.

Most of the work from home opportunities that are legitimate offers are not an hourly pay type job. They are business opportunities that help you in starting your own business from your home. What you should do first is to decide if you are simply looking for an hourly rate type job or if you are looking for more of an opportunity for additional income such as what you would make in your own business being your own boss from home. Small home businesses have some small costs involved, less than $500 to start is reasonable and I would stay away from those wanting $1000-$5000. It doesn’t cost that much to start and run a home business so you shouldn’t pay it.

If you are coming across places that say free then I would RUN don’t walk the other way! They never are. I tried them many a times and 3 weeks later I had to buy this and 6 weeks later that. After 6 months these “free businesses” had cost me over $800 on average.

After trying 15 things I now work about 18-25 hours per week for a National Medical Healthcare Company. This is a nationally known and reputable home business which is what you need to make sure you are looking for. I have been with the company almost a year and a half now and I make over $4500 a month! In your first month, depending on how many hours you can work, I have seen people make anywhere from $500 to over $2500. And your income will increase each month because you get paid residual income as well.

The best part is they have 401(k), direct deposit, life insurance and a benefits package most of which you get from day one. In addition, there are no products, no hard selling or pushing, no cold calling, no home parties and no telemarketing! That was VERY important to me. I absolutely love working with them and I can’t believe I am making what I am making and in so few hours per week. The neat thing is there are other people on your team that you work with so you are never alone. You have great team support and you get to know the other people on your team pretty well.

I was a bit apprehensive at first because I know a lot of companies are not legit but this company is the number one National Medical Benefits Company in the US. They are a member of the US Chamber of Commerce, and the National Association of Dental Plans and the owner of the company actually sits on the board of The Consumer Health Alliance to which we are also members. Also they were featured in “The New York Times”, “Wall Street Journal” “Time Magazine” “American Medical Review” and even in the May 2008 issue of “Parents Magazine”. Even “60 Minutes” did a big special on this home based business.

Even more then all this is they are accepted at over 100,000 retailers nationwide. These are fortune 500 companies like Sears, Target, K-mart, Rite Aid, CVS, Wal-mart, Publix and more. These companies would never work with a company that was anything less than reputable.

You can research the company at http://www.workathomeplus.net

TOP 10 WORK AT HOME SCAMS:

    10. Craft Assembly

    9. Medical Billing

    8. Email/Rebate Processing

    7. "A List of Companies Looking for Home workers!"

    6. "Just pay for and take this class first” Then we’ll give or find you a job!

    5. Typing At Home / Data Entry

    4. "Turn Your Computer Into a Money-Making Machine!"

    3. Pyramid Schemes (this is NOT the same as Multi-Level Marketing MLM)

    2. Chain Letters/Emails ("Make Money Fast")

    1. Envelope Stuffing

Please beware of these scams. There are some legit home businesses out there so be careful. Look for companies in business over 10 years. Look for companies with a needed product or service, something you would be proud to represent. Look for companies that have a national reputation and are members of the US Chamber of Commerce.

As for those of you who say…..”I want to work from home but I don’t want to have to pay for anything”. Well, that’s great! But it will never happen. Let’s be honest, there is no such thing as a free lunch. If it is a true honest home business you need to expect to pay. Mr. Walt Disney didn’t start the Disney empire “without paying for anything”. Neither did Mr. Sam Walton, owner of Wal-Mart.

Because of the great advantage of internet like low cost, global market audience, huge potential customer and easy to start. Where some people unethically take advantage to hype the whole idea of internet business. Usually in a form of membership, business opportunity program, information, start-up kit, survey, lead generation and much more.

But can how could you tell which one is legitimate and which is not? Some say, it must be a properly registered company. Let us go back to the basic of business. In those days where barter trade was in practice, people from the coast will trade salt for fur from the people of the mountain. Why would anyone trade valuable fur for something very common like salt? The transaction actually depends on the value system of both parties. Both parties must be in a win-win situation in order to achieve a position business transaction.

Looking at the demand and supply, why there so many illegitimate business out there? In my opinion, one of the main factors is the demand. Most people were so hype up by media reporting few successful people made millions or billions on the internet in a very short period. Some parties take unethical approach to supply the market with some dummy or valueless product or services with the intention to ride on the hype to cash-in some fast money.

This doesn’t mean that all membership site, information products, survey site or business opportunity program are not genuine. A hand full of work from home business is real and genuine. The same situation also happens in conventional offline business where business opportunities are everywhere, some are legitimate and some are not.

How can you identify whether a business is legitimate or not? One thing for sure, you can really know by judging at the website design. You can do some simple research to reduce your risk. Remember both online and offline also has "so called bad people" therefore it is very depend on you common sense and experience. There is no definite method in doing since we are looking global market where culture, tradition and practice vary from one places to another. Few guidelines you can follow.

    * Reputation and credibility of that person, with the emerge of web 2.0 like the feedback system implement by EBay, It will allow visitor or potential customer to understand the merchant reputation by reading at comments given by his/her previous customer.
    * How long he/she has been in the business. Most scammer or opportunistic taker will survive short term success before they are being exposed. They will hop from one market to another to find their victim. This is why in general public opinion; internet business is being marked as illegitimate business.
    * Accredited by reputable third party company, for example Google Advertising Professionals program which certify company or personal to manage multiple Adwords client accounts.
    * What are the terms and conditions apply. Very often you will hear some customer unhappy complain about certain merchant and vice versa. Most cases they are cause by misunderstanding on the transaction terms and conditions. Both parties has the responsible to agree upon the term and conditions before proceed with the transaction.

Summary some of us fear to start their work from home online business due to the negative element out there. Believe me everything has it good and bad, It is part of the nature. What we can help is to be the part of the "Good" force rather than the "Bad" one. If you have the passion to live your life by pursue home based business, don’t waste your time thinking about the negativity. Take precautions and try it out. It will unfair for me to tell you there is lot of shark in the sea don’t deep yourself in. Failure in work from home business will not cause your life, it probably cost you some time and money. If you do it online it will be at minimum.
